Edukea is a non-profit education platform. We respect your privacy and keep our data practices simple: Edukea is free, we do not sell your personal data, and we do not show third-party advertising. This Policy explains what we collect, why, how we use and share it, and the choices and rights you have. It applies to our website (edukea.co.tz) and our Android and iOS mobile apps (together, the "Services").
Edukea is a non-profit organisation registered in the United Republic of Tanzania (Reg. No. ooNGO/R/7681) and is the data controller responsible for your personal data. When you create an account we collect your email address and a password (or, if you sign in with Google or Apple, the basic identifier and email those services return). You may optionally add a name, profile photo, short biography, country, preferred language and phone number. Profile information you choose to add may be visible to other users.
We record your progress through lessons, quizzes and exercises (for example completed lessons, quiz scores and practice answers) so we can track and show your progress and personalise your learning.
Our English learning features let you record yourself speaking so the app can score your pronunciation and give feedback (the "read aloud", dictation and speaking exercises). When you use these features we collect the audio you record and a text transcription of it. We only access your microphone after you tap to record.
If you add or change a profile picture, you can take a photo or choose one from your device. We only access the camera or photo library when you start that action.
To keep the Services working and improve them, we and our providers automatically collect technical data such as device model and operating system, app version, language, general usage events, crash reports and performance data, and device or advertising identifiers. On Android the app may access the advertising ID for analytics; we do not use it to show you ads.
If you allow notifications, we collect a push token so we can send you reminders and updates. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
We do not knowingly collect sensitive data such as government ID numbers, race or ethnicity, or precise location, and you do not need to provide them to use Edukea.
Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on: your consent (microphone, camera, notifications, optional analytics), performance of a contract (providing your account and the Services), and our legitimate interests (security and improving the Services).
The app asks for these permissions only when you use the related feature, and you can change your mind at any time in your device settings:
Some features use artificial intelligence — translation, text-to-speech, speech recognition, pronunciation scoring and the AI tutor. To provide them, the text or audio you submit may be processed by trusted third-party AI providers (such as OpenAI, Groq and Microsoft Azure) acting on our behalf. We send only what is needed to perform the feature, and we do not sell this content. These providers may process data on servers outside Tanzania (see "International Transfers").
We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it for third-party advertising. We share data only with service providers who help us run Edukea, under contracts that limit how they may use it:
We may also disclose data if required by law, to protect the rights and safety of users and the public, or in connection with a reorganisation of our non-profit, with continued protection of your data.
Some of our providers (such as Google, Apple and the AI providers) store and process data on servers located outside Tanzania, including in the United States and the European Union. Where we transfer data internationally, we rely on these providers' safeguards and contractual protections to keep your data secure.
We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. Voice recordings and their transcriptions are kept only as needed to give you feedback and show your history, and you can ask us to delete them. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal data within a reasonable period, except where we must keep certain records to meet legal obligations.
We protect your data with encryption in transit (HTTPS), access controls, and trusted infrastructure providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and to notify you and the authorities where the law requires it in the event of a breach.
Edukea is designed to help learners of all ages, including children, learn English and other subjects. We collect only the minimal data needed for learning, we do not show advertising, and we do not use children's data for advertising or sell it.
If you are a child, please use Edukea with the involvement and permission of a parent or guardian. Parents and guardians may review their child's information, ask us to correct or delete it, and withdraw consent at any time by contacting privacy@edukea.co.tz. If you believe a child has provided us personal data without appropriate consent, contact us and we will promptly delete it.
You can access and update most of your information in your profile. Subject to applicable law, you may also request to access, correct, delete or export your data, or withdraw consent. To exercise these rights, email privacy@edukea.co.tz.
You can permanently delete your account and associated personal data:
We may update this Policy from time to time. When we make material changes we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. Your continued use of the Services after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
