The Clever Farmer

Mkulima Mjanja

Mzee Hamisi had farmed the same land for thirty years. When a long dry season came, his neighbours' crops died, but his maize stayed green. He had dug deep channels and stored rain water in a small pond. 'Patience and planning beat luck,' he often said. If the others had planned, they too would have survived.
